Ruan Guoxuan was born in Taishan, Guangdong. He grew up loving the arts of music, drama, calligraphy, and painting.
He started to learn the gong and drum skills from his uncle Ruan Dongsheng in 1973, and then studied under the famous teachers Zeng Ju Yuan and Yang Yao Hai. When he was a student in school, he often participated in the recreation class to perform modern model plays and held the board for the orchestra.
After graduating from high school in ’77, he joined the Yuexiu Opera Troupe in Guangzhou, the Guangdong Shunde Cantonese Opera Troupe, and the Jiangmen Cantonese Opera Troupe as a percussionist.
In 1985, he was appointed as the leader of the Guangzhou Yangcheng Cantonese Opera Troupe.
After immigrating to Canada in 1992, he served as the leader of several recreational groups in Toronto.
In 2002, he established the “Guo Xuan Ya Ji” in Toronto to develop and promote Cantonese Opera. He has been invited to New York, Boston, San Francisco, Vancouver, Calgary, Mantiko, Emmington, and Hong Kong as a percussion leader of Cantonese opera societies, and has contributed to the art of Cantonese opera through artistic exchanges with the opera community. In addition to music, he is also an accomplished artist in Chinese painting and calligraphy.
In 2010, he held his first solo exhibition of Chinese painting and calligraphy in many cities, and in 2014, he held a large-scale exhibition of Chinese painting and calligraphy, which was recognized by the painting and calligraphy community and established him as a contemporary “aestheticist” artist.
